president obama invited the major players to the white house to discuss the situation. as of this morning, no new talks are scheduled. brianna keilar joins us. so many republicans say they are pessimistic about a deal happening in time to avert this fiscal cliff. some say it's for political reasons. what can you tell us? >> it may all be for political reasons. that's no surprise in washington. as you can seen through dealmaking not just on this but things in the past couple of years between the white house and congress, there is almost this rhythm that has evolved. both sides are pointing to the other for an impasse. republicans like senator lindeyy graham just slamming the white house and tim geithner for a plan he laid out on behalf of the administration, laying out about $1.6 trillion in new revenues coupled with only about $400 billion in medicare cuts. listen to what graham said. >> i think we're going over the cliff. it's pretty clear to me they made a political calculation. this offer doesn't remotely deal with entitlement reform in a way to save medicare, medicaid and social secur

under federal law. now this huge question arises. having worked in the white house on this issue, what is the obama administration going to do? >> the president has been clear he's against legalization. we know we are going to have a cheaper drug, more people are going to use it. it's going to be more socially acceptable. it's a problem in one in six kids. it can be a problem on the roads and learning iq. the administration is against it. what the justice department does because they have ten different legal things they are trying to do. that's the more interesting question. federal is federal law. i can't imagine the administration is going to say they are okay with retail sales. you might be able to have people grow their own. i think if the governor of colorado was right to say not to break out the cheetos just yet. a lot needs to be ironed out here. >> the studies and negative consequences. there's a lot of interesting gain on this. there's data with no effect. some that finds some negative facts depending on when kids smoke it. it has to be compared to alcohol. in some ways, that

, president obama is trying to break that stalemate by asking voters to put more pressure on the republicans. cnn chief white house correspondent jessica yellin and chief political correspondent gloria borger join us right now. gloria, guess i'll start with you. does the president have any leverage? >> he has a lot of leverage right now. i mean, if you look back to the debt ceiling in the summer of 2011, you recall the president was accused of negotiating with himself because it was sort of a time of weakness for him. right now, look, joe, he's just won re-election. 67% of the american public according to our polls believes that there should be a deal that contains a combination of spending cuts and tax increases. more than half of the american public says, you know what, we'd like the taxes on the wealthy to go up. so he does have public opinion on his side. just been re-elected. so he feels like, you know, he's got the wind at his back so to speak. >> jessica yellin, when you look at the situation a lot of democrats on capitol hill are suggesting they're ready to go over the fiscal cliff.
